Project Scope Management

Project Scope Management

Scope refers to all of the work involved in creating the products of a project and any processes used to produce them. It defines what IS or IS NOT to be done within what is called your Project Scope and the management of those deliverables.

Deliverables are products or services produced as part of a project, such as hardware or software, planning & scheduling documents, or quality paperwork.

The project team and stakeholders must have the same understanding of what products will be produced as a result of a project and how they’ll be produced to keep the project within the cost, time and performance requirements.

You will learn the five Project Scope Management Processes defined in PMBOK® in this session which are:

  • Scope Initiation – the beginning of a project or continuing to the next phase

  • Scope Planning – the developing of documents to provide the basis for future project decisions

  • Scope Definition – the subdividing of the major project deliverables into smaller, more manageable components

  • Scope Verification – the formalizing acceptance of the project scope

  • Scope Change Control – the controlling of changes to project scope

You will learn why Scope creep management is important for effective project management and the effects of “Gold Plating”. Projects are expected to meet strict deadlines with resource constraints, and unapproved change in the scope can affect the success of the project.
